mentoplasty
Before the Operation.
The new size and shape of the chin has to be carefully planned to ensure it looks in harmony with the rest of the face. Digital photographic manipulation software (see digital imaging section) is used to assist with this assessment. Occasionally x-rays will also be needed to assist in achieving the best possible result.
The Operation.
The operation can last from 30 minutes up to an hour depending on the individual and the surgical requirements. The procedure is usually performed under general anaesthetic but if mentoplasty is the sole procedure it can be carried out under local anaesthetic and sedation. The operation is usually carried out as a day case. If an implant is being used, this will be placed in front of the mandible (jawbone) through a small external incision underneath the chin. The same incision can be used to reduce the size of the chin. Small stitches are used to close this wound which are removed one week later. A compression bandage is applied to the chin after surgery to prevent a blot clot collecting. This is removed 24 hours later.
